Malaria also uses extended illustrations, providing examples, and anticipating arguments as a strategy. He demonstrates truth behind his claims by acknowledging that unions attempted to boycott the company as a â€Å"Merchant of Shame. † The boycott go no results, but the coalition has more effectively waged legislative battles around the country. What Was the Story Behind Mississippi Burning

The Mississippi civil rights workers murders involved the 1964 lynching of three political activists during the American Civil Rights Movement. The murders of James Chaney, a 21-year-old black man from Meridian, Mississippi; Andrew Goodman, a 20-year-old white Jewish anthropology student from New York; and Michael Schwerner, a 24-year-old white Jewish CORE organizer and former social worker also from New York, symbolized the risks of participating in the Civil Rights Movement in the South during what became known as â€Å"Freedom Summer†, dedicated to voter registration. The lynching of the three young men occurred shortly after midnight on June 21, 1964, when they went to investigate the burning of a church that supported civil rights activity. James Chaney was a local Freedom Movement activist in Meridian, Michael Schwerner was a CORE organizer from New York, and Andrew Goodman, also from New York, was a Freedom Summer volunteer. The three men had just finished week-long training on the campus of Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, regarding strategies on how to register blacks to vote. After getting a haircut from a black barber in Meridian, the three men headed to Longdale, Mississippi, 50 miles away in Neshoba County, in order to inspect the ruins of Mount Zion United Methodist Church. The church, a meeting place for civil rights groups, had been burned just five days earlier. Aware that their station wagon's license number had been given to members of the notorious White Citizens' Council and Ku Klux Klan, before leaving Meridian they informed other Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) workers of their plans and set check-in times in accordance with standard security procedures. Late that afternoon, Neshoba County deputy Cecil Price — himself a member of the White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan — stopped the blue Ford carrying the trio. He arrested Chaney for allegedly driving 35 miles per hour over the speed limit. He also booked Goodman and Schwerner, â€Å"for investigation. † Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney were all denied telephone calls during their time at the jail. COFO workers made attempts to find the three men, but when they called the Neshoba County jail, the secretary followed her instructions to lie and told the workers the three young men were not there. During the hours they were held incommunicado in jail, Price notified his Klan associates who assembled and planned how to kill the three civil rights workers. While awaiting their release, the men were given a dinner of spoonbread, green peas, potatoes and salad. When the Klan ambush was set up on the road back to Meridian, Chaney was fined $20, and the three men were ordered to leave the county. Price followed them to the edge of town, and then pulled them over with his police siren. He held them until the Klan murder squad arrived. They were taken to an isolated spot where James Chaney was beaten and all three were shot to death. Their car was driven into Bogue Chitto swamp and set on fire, and their bodies were buried in an earthen dam. In June 2000, the autopsy report that had been previously withheld from the 1967 trial was released. The report stated Chaney had a left arm broken in one place, a right arm broken in two places, â€Å"a marked disruption† of the left elbow joint and may also have suffered trauma to the groin area. A pathologist who examined the bodies at the families' request following their autopsies noted Chaney also had a broken jaw and a crushed right shoulder which were not mentioned in the autopsy report. As the autopsy photographs and X-Rays had been destroyed, the injuries could not be confirmed. Reaction The national uproar caused by the disappearance of the civil rights workers led President Lyndon Johnson to force J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI to investigate the case. Hoover's antipathy to civil rights groups caused him to resist until Johnson used indirect threats of political reprisals. During the investigation, searchers including Navy divers and the FBI discovered the bodies of at least seven other Mississippi blacks, whose disappearances over the past several years had not attracted attention outside their local communities. The disappearance of the three activists captured national attention for six weeks until their bodies were found. Johnson and civil rights activists used the outrage over their deaths in their efforts to bring about the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, signed July 2, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Patrick Henry, an American Revolutionary Patriot

Patrick Henry was more than just a lawyer, patriot, and orator; he was one of the great leaders of the American Revolutionary War who is best known for the quote â€Å"Give me liberty or give me death†, yet this leader never held a national political office. Although Henry was a radical leader in opposition to the British, he refused to accept the new U.S. government and is considered instrumental for the passage of the Bill of Rights. Early Years Patrick Henry was born in  Hanover County, Virginia  on May 29, 1736,  to John and Sarah Winston Henry.  Patrick was born on a plantation which had belonged to his mother’s family for a long time. His father was a Scottish immigrant who attended Kings College at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and whom also educated Patrick at home.  Patrick was the second oldest of nine children. When Patrick was fifteen, he managed a store his father owned, but this business soon failed. As were many of this era, Patrick grew up in a religious setting with an uncle who was an Anglican minister and his mother would take him to Presbyterian services. In 1754, Henry married Sarah Shelton and they had six children before her death in 1775.  Sarah had a dowry which was a 600-acre tobacco farm which also included a house with six slaves.  Henry was unsuccessful as a farmer and in 1757 the house was destroyed by a fire. After selling the slaves, Henry was also unsuccessful as a storekeeper. Henry studied law on his own, as was customary at that time in colonial America. In 1760, he passed his attorney’s examination in Williamsburg, Virginia before a group of the most influential and famous Virginia lawyers including Robert Carter Nicholas, Edmund Pendleton, John and Peyton Randolph, and George Wythe. Legal and Political Career In 1763, Henry’s reputation as not only a lawyer but also who was able to captivate an audience with his oratory skills was secured with the famous case known as â€Å"Parson’s Cause.†Ã‚  Colonial Virginia had passed a law regarding payment for ministers which resulted in decreasing their income.  The ministers complained which caused King George III to overturn it. A minister won a lawsuit against the colony for back pay and it was up to a jury to determine the amount of damages. Henry convinced the jury to only award a single farthing (one penny) by arguing that a king would veto such a law was nothing more than â€Å"a tyrant who forfeits the allegiance of his subjects.†Ã¢â‚¬â€¹ Henry was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1765 where he became one the earliest argue against the Crown’s oppressive colonial policies.  Henry gained fame during the debate over the Stamp Act of 1765 which negatively impacted mercantile trade in the North American colonies by requiring almost every paper used by colonists were to be printed on  stamped paper  that was produced in London and contained an embossed  revenue stamp. Henry argued that on Virginia should have the right to levy any taxes on its’ own citizens. Although some believed that Henry’s comments were treasonous, once his arguments were published in other colonies, the displeasure with British rule began to flourish. American Revolutionary War Henry used his words and rhetoric in a way that made him  a driving force behind the revolt against Britain.  Although Henry was very well educated, he was to discuss his political philosophies into words that the common man could easily grasp and make as their own ideology as well. His oratory skills helped to have him selected in 1774 to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia where he not only served as a delegate but is where he met Samuel Adams.  At the Continental Congress, Henry united the colonists stating that The distinctions between Virginians, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers and New Englanders, are no more. I am not a Virginian, but an American. In March 1775 at the Virginia Convention, Henry made the argument for taking military action against Britain with what is commonly referred to as his most famous speech proclaiming that Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? ... Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death! Shortly after this speech, the American Revolution  began on April 19, 1775, with the â€Å"shot heard around the world† at Lexington and Concord.  Although Henry was immediately named as commander in chief of Virginias forces, he quickly resigned this post preferring to stay in Virginia where he aided in drafting the states constitution and becoming its’ first governor in 1776. As governor, Henry aided George Washington by supplying troops and much-needed provisions.  Although Henry would resign after serving three terms as governor, he would serve two more terms in that position in the mid-1780s.  In 1787, Henry chose not to attend the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia which resulted in the drafting of a new Constitution. As an  Anti-Federalist, Henry opposed the new Constitution arguing that this document would not only promote a corrupt government but that the three branches would compete with each other for more power leading to a tyrannical federal government.  Henry also objected to the Constitution because it did not contain any freedoms or rights for individuals. At the time, these were commonplace in state constitutions which were based on the Virginia model that Henry helped to write and which explicitly listed the individual rights of citizens that were protected. This was in direct opposition to the British model which did not contain any written protections. Henry argued against Virginia ratifying the Constitution as he believed that it did not protect states rights.  However, in an 89-to-79 vote, Virginia lawmakers ratified the Constitution. The Final Years In 1790 Henry chose to be a lawyer over public service, turning down appointments to the United States Supreme Court, Secretary of State and U.S. Attorney General.  Instead, Henry enjoyed that he had a successful and thriving legal practice as well as spending with his second wife, Dorothea Dandridge, who he had married in 1777. Henry also had seventeen children who were born between his two wives. In 1799, fellow Virginian George Washington persuaded Henry to run for a seat in the Virginia legislature.  Although Henry won the election, he died on June 6, 1799, at his â€Å"Red Hill† estate prior to ever taking office.  Henry is commonly referred to as one of the great revolutionary leaders who lead to the formation of the United States.

Parish nursings roots began centuries ago and is now planting the concepts of whole person health care in local congregations around the United States. Granger Westberg, a Lutheran minister, saw the need for preventative health care in the form of mind, body, and spiritual counseling. Centuries ago ancient Greeks and Romans perceived healing and religion as identical. Monks and nuns served as healers in religious orders such as the famous Sisters of Charity (McGee, 1998). The church was a place for the sick to come and be healed physically and spiritually. Many of the first hospitals were built and supported financially by congregations. Granger Westberg recognized the positive connection the church and hospital had together years ago and proposed the idea of having a professional registered nurse work in the congregation and set up a wellness clinic. Westberg tested his idea in poor neighborhoods with volunteer medical professionals and received positive reviews from community members, hospitals, and churches. The program gained popularity and thus spawned parish nursing in the United States in the late 1970s (Peterson, 1982). The term wholistic health care is fairly new and is often confused with holistic health care. While holistic health care focuses on working with peoples energy and involves practices such as acupuncture, wholistic health care focuses on a persons mind, body, and spirituality. Wholistic health care is centered on the belief that a persons spirituality and outlook on life is directly related to a persons health. Parish nursing is a way to encompass both the science of healthcare and the spirituality of religion. Granger Westberg believes parish nursing bridges the gap between religion and health (Mcgee, 1998). According to Solari-Twadell and Mcdermott in their book Parish Nursing-Promoting Whole Person Health Within Faith Communities, the philosophy behind this unique profession is that Parish nursing holds the spiritual dimensions to be central to the practice. It also encompasses the physical, psychological, and social dimensions of nursing practice. It focuses on the spirituality of the nurse and their skills experience. The book also outlines the seven functions of the parish nurse which include: integrator of faith and health, health educator, personal health counselor, referral agent, trainer of volunteers, developer of support groups, and health advocate. The beauty of parish nursing is the individual approach of nursing can be determined by the parish and thus it can serve his or her congregations special needs. While the American Nurses Association and Health Ministries Association have standards of practice for the profession of parish nursing, each parish nurse must individualize her focus of practice for their congregation to meet the communities individualized needs. One parish nurse describes her role, â€Å"It is not to provide hands on nursing, but to be a resource in the church community for problem solving in medical and or spiritual matters† (Lehman, 2004). Registered nurses interested in becoming a parish nurse must undergo the basic preparation which includes 30 hours of continuing education, orientation, meetings with congregations and health ministries. Classes in theology of health, history, philosophy, and working with churches are also recommended (Solari-Twadell and Mcdermott, 1999). As the profession of parish nursing has grown, standards of practice have been determined by the A.N.A. and H.M.A. which legitimize parish nursing as a profession. Many also argue that there should be a more structured for of education requirements for persons interested in becoming a parish nurse. Once a parish nurse enters a congregation they must perform a documented assessment on the congregational community. This assessment informs the parish nurse on the issues that are most important to the community and help the parish nurse to make an individualized plan of care. For example, if high blood pressure is a problem in the community the parish nurse can set up monthly blood pressure checks. The parish nurse isn’t the only person that needs to be educated, the pastor is a key component to the success of a parish nurse program and should be educated on the benefits parish nursing has on a community. It is important for the pastor and parish nurse to meet on a regular basis to discuss parishioners and improvements that can be made in the congregation. Individuality is an important characteristic for parish nurses. Each congregation has different needs and it is important for the parish nurse to recognize these needs and address them with full potential. Due to the individuality of congregations across the United States there are two basic types of parish nurse programs, the volunteer model and the paid model. Due to limited funds, many congregations have volunteer parish nurses that donate their time to the congregation a few hours a week. According to one journal article, Parish nurse special interest group: organizational framework for parish nursing, there are ups and downs to each model. The benefits of the volunteer model according to parish nurses include: â€Å"serves as a mean to use our expertise while serving our faith community, gives the parish nurse and faith community a chance to try out the program and it is affordable to the faith community.† Downs include: â€Å"availability limited by the amount of time t he parish nurse can devote, limits what the faith community can ask of the parish nurse, and the question of the accountability of the volunteer vs. the paid parish nurse† (Parish nurse special, 2001). Whether volunteer or paid, a parish nurse program benefits any congregation. As parish nursing continues to grow as a profession, educational standards and models of framework will improve and the success of parish nurse programs will flourish. Parish nursing is a profession dedicated to serving the whole person including mind, body, and spirit and would be a benefit to any faith community.
